Its a Beautiful Day for a Farmers' Market!

This weeks cake!  Chocolate Cake with Strawberries, Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting and Chocolate Ganache.  You guys are going to want a slice of this one.  YUM.  2.50 per slice.  If you would like to make sure that you get a piece and avoid the very real danger of it all being sold before you get there, send me an email at piperlove@ymail.com, and I will save one for you!

ALSO, I share a table with my friend Karen who roasts her own coffee...and it is absolutely fantastic.  Seriously. 3  years at Starbucks made me super picky about coffee, and this is the only stuff I will buy.  $10/pound, and I would pay $20.  She also sells iced coffee every week for $2 a cup...goes great with baked goods!!

Today, Thursday July 22.  From 3-7 in downtown Laconia.  Lots of great vendors, and what a beautiful day for a Market!

Would love to see you there!!!

Cake of the Week

So I apologize for my inconsistency once again.  I haven't even posted my first wedding cake yet.  Ugh.  Life is crazy and I have a time management problem.

WELL I am just posting tonight to let those of you who don't know already in on the CAKE OF THE WEEK for the Laconia Farmers' Market!  I bring a different cake each week...so far its been Coconut Cake with Raspberry Filling and Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting, Vanilla Cake with Apricot Filling and Swiss Meringue Buttercream Frosting, and Lemon Cake with Homemade Blueberry Filling and Zesty Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting.  People have been LOVING them, and I am always so excited to see the reactions!  The cakes have been such a hit that I've decided (thanks to the brilliant idea of my friend Lisa), to have an emailing list, informing those on it of what the cake of the week is, and allowing them to pre-order a slice, or a whole cake...or really anything from the PiperBellies table.  This is mainly for the cake though, because it has sold out every week, and I have had several people come and be disappointed to find only crumbs left.  SO if you would like to be part of this elite email list, please contact me at piperlove@ymail.com and I will add you!  I do also post the cake of the week on Facebook, but that is easy to miss, and not everyone has facebook.  AND as you know I'm rather inconsistent with the blog, but I'll work on having it up here and also on the website (www.piperbellies.com) every week.

The Cake of the Week for this Thursday at the Laconia Market from 3-7 is going to be a Chocolate Cake with Strawberries and Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting.  YUM.  Look for pictures on Facebook or the email chain on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.  Only 12 slices, so come early, or pre-order!

Thank you everyone for all of your support.  I couldn't do this without you!

Love, love.

New goal...again.

I realize that I tend to jump from goal to goal, and that this is not a desirable trait in life, but.....bear with me.

I struggle, along with 90% of all women in Amercia, with my body image.  Sorry, boys...this is a kind of girly one...but you may be able to benefit.  This struggle is due to Victoria Secret models and their impossible proportions, Hollywood women who do not age (its not magic, its plastic surgery), and clothing designers who only design clothes meant to fit on a 6 foot tall, bulimic, 16 year olds.  This puts pressure on the average, real, American woman, to somehow fit into this super model image, which is just not a reality for 99% of us.

God has made us all unique.  Some of us were born with hips that refuse to fit into jeans, hair that just will not cooperate when there is the slightest humidity in the air, our grandmothers knees, skin that belongs on a greasy 14 year old's face, but is for some reason stuck on yours.  Maybe you think your neck too long, or your nose is too big, or you have too many freckles, you don't have enough freckles, your hair color is ugly, your feet are grotesque, your legs look like tree trunks, your butt is all dimply, there is a muffin top bulging over your jeans, your boobs are too small or too big, your arms are flabby, blablablablaBLA!

Maybe we haven't been as healthy as we should be, maybe we haven't made the time to exercise, maybe we have given our children or our careers, or husbands or boyfriends or whatever, every bit of ourselves, and have completely let ourselves go.  No matter what your life is like, I pray that you will realized just HOW important you are.  I implore you to make time for yourself.  Do not lose YOURSELF in your life!  You are amazing and you must take care of the body God has given you.  You will feel better...I will feel better... and more fulfilled.

Listen, ladies.  Why are we constantly comparing ourselves to other women??  What is the point of that? Who cares how we "measure up" to these women against the shallow values of this plummeting society?  God made us who we are just the way we are on purpose.  Most of us are never going to fit into those size 00 jeans, which for some reason exist, and that's okay!  My goal is to be MY best.  Not anyone else's.

GET TO THE POINT.

Okay, basically my point is that I'm tired of feeling badly about myself.  There is not point in picking apart every little detail of my body and hating every bit of it.  I want to be comfortable in my own skin, not wish I was in someone else's.  My goal is to be healthy.  To exercise regularly.  I feel better when I am healthier.  But really the point is...accept yourself.  Be your best you, and be thankful for what you have.  Do not compare yourself.  Be you.  That's all.

congrats grads.

This weekend I made another cake for my friend Lindsey!  It was really fun because I had already made a cake for her, but last time it sort of had to match a couple of other people's cakes, but this time it was more personalized...still school colors and everything...just a little more HER.

My little brother Erik also graduated this weekend!  Woohoo!!  We had a big party at our house to celebrate.  His school colors are black and white but he wanted a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting...so this is how I made that happen...we also needed some cupcakes because there were so many people coming...it was really fun, actually, despite the small frosting catastrophe I had at 2 o'clock in the morning.

Love you Erik!   So proud of you!

Okay, that is IT for the graduation cakes...though I do have another one in August...but for now, we'll take a break.  Whew.

Ian and Nick

My friend Nick, whom I have known since he was 3, has also graduated from high school this year, and I was asked to make the cake for him and his friend.  Nick and Ian's school colors are silver and blue, and wanted a vanilla cake....so here it is!  Congratulations, guys!

Flower Cake

I was asked to make a cake for a 50th anniversary celebration...50 years!  What an honor to make a cake for such an event!  This cake was a blast to make because it was only for 10 people, so the bottom is 8 inches and the top is a little 6 incher!    Its a vanilla cake with apricot filling and swiss meringue buttercream frosting.  Yum.  I was told that the flower for the 50th anniversary is the violet and the color is gold.  SO I made little fondant violets and put them all over the cake like they were spilling over from the top.  I also put a gold ribbon around the bottom of each tier.  I really enjoyed making the cake!

There it is!

Jungle Cake!

A friend of mind had a baby shower today and I was asked to make this cake!  A jungle themed cake to welcome little Evan Robert into the world!  I had so much fun making this cake.  It was the most fondant work I've done on my own and I just had a blast.  I didn't get a picture of the inside of the cake but when you cut into it, each tier is cut into three layers and the frosting between the layers was colored too.  One yellow and one green, and chocolate cake.  This made it not so hard to take apart and cut into after all my hard work, because I knew the inside was pretty too (and delicious, if I do say so myself).  So I took a bunch of pictures so you could see all of the elements and details.  Here they are, and congratulations, Cassie!

The CAKE!
 The BACK of the cake
The TOP of the cake, snake and all

 Mr. Giraffe
Monkey!
They call him the King of the Jungle.
The elephant is my favorite.
The tree on the back of the cake.
And the whole thing one more time...just for fun.

Isn't it fun!?!?

read if you really want to, but don't expect much.

well, i guess i should blog about something.

i have no one to talk to at the moment, but am feeling like i need to get some stuff out...so...here goes nothing.

sometimes i feel like i just say the same things over and over....my mind does that a lot, so that's pretty much just what comes out.  over....and over.......... i apologize.

well, my phone is dead.  it worked for a day.  then died completely.  also, my old phone is just sending texts in the middle of my typing them.  gosh i hate that phone.  i'm dwelling too much on this, i know.  but really.  the ONE phone i've ever liked.  ah, my brain.

my friend marcus has FINALLY arrived.  he travels a lot, so we only get him for a few months at a time once a year if we're lucky.  last time he was here was last summer for tracy and josh's wedding when piper was little....by little i mean younger than she is now, but way fatter.  she was a little leery of him for the first couple of days, but now loves him again.  thank goodness!  we're really glad that he's home.  we miss him when he's gone.  its nice to have a friend who always feels like he belongs.  you know what i mean?  sometimes you have friends that are just a lot of work.  you're always worried about them feeling awkward and not entertained enough or...whatever.  he's not like that though.  he just fits.  speaking of people that fit... uncle alex is on his way home!  he's had a rough end of the semester and we're really looking forward to welcoming him HOME.  he will arrive on friday night after spending some time in jersey for God knows what reason.  so....summer is here!  let the games begin!

i have a lot of cake orders coming up at the end of the month for graduations and baptisms and 50th anniversaries....7 cakes total, with some cookies and brownies and whatnot thrown in the mix.  woohoo!  i'm pretty excited to make them all, but i'm really having trouble organizing my time so that its not a HUGE deal for me to make a cake.  yes, its an art and it takes quite a bit of time...but i think maybe i'm in the wrong mindset about the whole thing.  i started my own business so that i could spend more time with piper (who is very close to walking...many many steps have been taken...just not a lot in a row).  BUT having your own business is a lot of work, and therefore takes a lot of time.  so i can't just expect that i'll have enough time to do all of my work when piper is asleep...its just not realistic.  i need to have people help me when i need help...i need someone to watch piper while i bake, or even while i just get myself organized!  i just need to accept the fact that i am only one person and i have kind of a lot going on.  i'm a single mom and i own my own business for starters.  i need help, and i need to learn how to ask for it and accept it because i just can't live like this anymore.  i'm tired of doing everything half way.  i need to do life well.  i just feel so unaccomplished, even though i'm getting things done.  i just know there is so much more.

okay i feel a little better.  now i just need to DO what i just decided for the hundredth time.

phew.

really!?!?

so i have this great new cell phone...got it about a month ago, after 2 years of the cell phone from hell.  its a really great flip phone...takes movies and everything.  i love it.

so i got back from being out all day, gave piper dinner, gave her a bath, read her a book, put her to bed around 6:45...the usual routine.  then, because i didn't have a chance to go on a run this morning, i got ready to go on a run.  since there were a pile of clean clothes on the stairs with my running clothes in it, i decided to just take of my clothes and change right there at the bottom of the stairs because it was easier....at the same time my mom came in the room to put some laundry in the wash, so i said...oh, here are my clothes.  thanks mom!

went out on a run...which was actually really great and i probably could have gone for another mile if i wasn't afraid of being outside in the dark (yes, i am from new hampshire, and i know i shouldn't be afraid of such things, but what can i say.).  i think the run went so well because i was afraid that i was going to be attacked by a bear the whole time, so the adrenaline kept me moving.  but seriously...running through the woods when the sun is setting is scary.  also, i swallowed a bug.  blagh.

got back from my run, got some gatorade, spilled some on the floor, wiped it up, went outside and walked around, stretched, came inside, decided to go down to camp to make beds so i didn't have to do it tomorrow morning, looked for my cell phone so that i could make a quick phone call first..........where is it?  oh no.  its not in the diaper bag.  its not in my room.  it was in my shorts.  my shorts are in the washer.  oh no.  yup.  i washed the only cell phone i have ever liked, and its probably ruined.  i of course have no insurance on it.  nooo...i'm too cheap for that.  also, i've never needed insurance on any of my other phones (all of which i hated, except for that one that made the cool noise when you opened and closed it...).

so.  my poor little phone was sitting under a heat lamp for 15 mins until i read something that said don't do that....right after i read something that said DO do that.  anyways.  now its in a baggy with rice...hopefully drying out.  if this doesn't work, i guess i'll have to switch back to my old phone.  also known as...the worst cell phone on the planet.

and it didn't make me feel any better when i read an article that said that 2000 people wash their cell phones every day (mostly men).  now i'm just lumped in a group with 1999 other idiots of the day.

oh, hey!

sorry, guys.  i've been busy.  and right now my computer is being lame.  BUT i just wanted to post a picture of the cake i just did for the owner of a fabulous burrito shop in downtown laconia called Burrito Me.  His wife had a surprise 30th birthday party for him and asked me to make the cake!  She wanted Happy Birthday Aaron to look like the Burrito Me logo, so i took my first venture into fondant lettering...which btw is a pain in the butt.  but does look nice.  basically i found a font that was similar to the burrito me font, printed out "happy birthday aaron" on the computer, cut those letters out of the paper with an exacto knife, THEN cut the letters out in fondant and let it dry before i put it on the cake!  the swirlies are also a part of the logo.  top layer vanilla, bottom layer chocolate, chocolate and vanilla swiss meringue buttercream for the frosting and the filling.  it was quite delicious if i do say so myself!  here it is!

and check out the Burrito Me facebook page to see their logo so you can compare!

I had a ton of fun doing this (with a little bit of frustration and a very little bit of sleep), but the end result was totally worth it.  Thank you, Mandy, Aaron, and Remy for ordering!

p.s. this is a sample box I put together for someone...

spicy chocolate brownie, chocolate dipped shortbread,
vegan chocolaty chocolate cookies, and lavender heart cookies
(half dozen of each cookie, and 3 brownies)

A custom sample box with 4 things in it like this costs around 30 dollars, depending on what you order.

thats all for now!

ALSO, piper is wearing pigtails and took 3 steps all by herself!  :)

praying for flight.

sometimes, life is not what we expected it would be.
but it is what we have been given.
so we take it.
and we run.
we run as hard as we can.
sometimes we fall.
but sometimes
we fly.

i am praying for flight.

stuff

here's a quick update on some things i've been doing while i haven't been blogging.

easter orders went out...people mostly ordered the carrot bread and shortbread cookies, but i did have an order for a lemon meringue pie and a cake, and some other random things.  people seemed to love them!  and i did love making them :)  also, i got my first order from the website (for that pie) about 10 minutes after i put the website up!  no action since...but thats okay.
(this is the chocolate cake, covered in chocolate ganache)

i have been working on choosing which farmer's markets i'm going to be a vendor in this summer, which is something i am very excited about.  there's something about the farmer's market community that just makes me happy and feel like i'm doing something that is ME.  finally.  so, if you have any tips on which farmer's markets in the area are worthwhile, please email me or comment with some pointers!  (piperlove@ymail.com)

also had an order for some wedding shower favors from an old friend of mine, which was fun, and they were super cute.

burrito me was asking for some more cookies that were cheaper to sell so that more people would buy them, which would be better for everyone!  they were getting the 2 most expensive cookies to make, which were the vegan cookies, and the coconut chocolate chip, which are both delicious, but have some expensive ingredients in them, so we felt that maybe we could get more people to buy something else that was just as delicious, but a little more affordable.  i would rather have more people buying than less.  duh.  SO i made them these lime shortbread and spicy chocolate brownies.  they were both really yummy, and i think they will go perfectly with BURRITOS!
                                  (lime shortbread)                                       (spicy chocolate brownies)

my friend lindsay turned 21 and her sister and dad threw her a fabulous party with a 5 course meal and dresses and bow ties and candles and everything!  they asked me to make some chocolate cupcakes for dessert with blue, green, and purple frosting in the shape of roses on the top.  they were quite pretty and really tasty if i do say so myself.

in other news i have received my first wedding cake order!!!  pretty excited!  a 3 tiered chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and raspberry filling....YUM.  thats in july.

also, piper has had a double ear infection that just won't seem to go away for the last month.  fun times.  poor thing.

thats about it for now!

sorry about the lack of blogging lately.  i have kind of a lot going on.  good and exciting things.  mostly.  update hopefully soon.  love love.

blablabla...and an EASTER MENU!

hello everyone.  i use the term "everyone" loosely.  for all i know there are only 3 of you who read this...but i love you three.

anywho, i've been running around like a crazy person not actually doing anything these last couple of weeks with a sick little girl.  nothing big, just enough to make her super cranky and not sleep and feel pretty miserable.  poor thing.  we went to the doctors yesterday (which was very fortunate because i met my future husband who is a student following the nurse practitioner there....ahhh...i felt like i was in grey's anatomy.....only better.), and got some antibiotics for an ear infection and she seems to be in much better spirits today.  we went out for the first time in a couple weeks...thank goodness.

SO.  i tell you all of this to let you know that i did plan on doing an easter menu that was up to par with the valentines day menu as far as pictures and whatnot go, but due to the craziness of everything, that did not happen.  thats the bad news.  the good news is that i do HAVE an easter menu...just not one with pictures of everything.

here it is!

PiperBellies Easter Menu

PEAR BLUEBERRY GALLET
A pie made without a pan! The delicious crust is folded around pears, blueberries, and a smidge of cranberries. Very rustic looking, and guess what…there’s pound cake on the bottom. Oh yeah. $17 each

L
LAVENDER FLOWER COOKIES
These are a sophisticated, light, and crisp sugar cookie cut into the shape of a spring flowers.  They are subtly sweet and slightly savory.  Little lavender flowers give these cookies a unique and truly lovely flavor.             $10 per dozen

LEMON RICOTTA COOKIES
Cakey and soft, these zesty little mounds are like several bites of spring sunshine.  They are fresh and lemony, topped with a glaze that will leave you with no choice but to eat another one.  $12 per dozen

EASTER SHORTBREAD COOKIES
Everyone's favorite classic and chocolate shortbread cut into the shapes of bunnies, chicks, crosses, and eggs, and decorated with spring colored white chocolate.  This is an array that may look like its for the kids, but adults...I'd suggest you eat as many of these as you can while the children are on their Easter egg hunt.       $15 for two large egg cookies, two large bunny cookies, four chicks, six flowers, and one cross.

CARROT RAISIN WALNUT BREAD
Every Easter dinner should include a fresh loaf of bread (and I do not mean something that comes frozen and is shaped like a mini croissant.).   This carrot raisin walnut bread is a rustic 8 inch loaf that is wonderfully crusty and full of flavor and texture.  Made with pure carrot juice and speckled with raisins and walnuts.  This is one of my personal favorites.       $6 per loaf

Please order with at least three days notice.  Place your orders with me (Courtney) at piperlove@ymail.com or (603) 998-0439.  Small fee for delivery.  Thank you so much!

Carrot Raisin Walnut Bread

Lavender Cookies...just in the wrong shape.
Yours will be shaped like spring flowers.
